Qualification information

Aims

The qualification aims to:

Green energy suppliersGeneral information

This qualification has been designed by City & Guilds to support Government initiatives in respect of providing training and assessment to support a competent workforce to meet the requirements for Energy Assessors.

The Qualification is aimed primarily at those who already possess a basic knowledge and understanding of home inspections as well as qualified domestic energy assessors and who wish to extend their knowledge. It is also suitable for those who are studying in preparation for employment in activities where they will be expected to work autonomously in carrying out Home Inspections.

General Structure

The qualification is made up of three units. The first unit describes the underpinning knowledge that is required to understand the theory behind energy assessments; construction principles, RDSAP methodology and conventions. It also covers issues relating to customer care and safe working practices. The second unit is concerned with the application of practical skills in carrying out Energy Assessments. The third unit is concerned with the application of practical skills when carrying out Home Inspections – this can be completed at a later stage if required.

Assessments

The Award

For the award of a certificate candidates must successfully complete all assessment units.

Unit 1 – Principles of energy assessment  6020-001
Unit 2 – Prepare, undertake and produce Domestic Energy Assessments  6020-002
(Unit 3 – Prepare, undertake and produce Home Condition Reports  6020-003) not on this course, next level.

Practical assessment is based on the energy assessment of domestic properties.

The following unit will be comprehensive for all Home Inspections. The unit will be assessed by the production of at least FIVE assignments, effectively the production of at least 5 EPCs and all associated documentation (sketch plans, digital photographs). Candidates will be able to use EPCs from prior assessments as long as they meet the criteria detailed by City & Guilds. These EPCs must be put into the correct format and will be re-assessed as part of the City & Guilds’ verification process.

Candidates must complete at least one assignment for each of the following age bands.

Candidates must cover all of the following housing types at least once when completing the assignments.

The EPCs must cover at least five of the following six issues. NB: more than one issue can arise in one assignment.

We register you for your course with City & Guilds and register you with SAVA (NHER – National Home Energy Rating Scheme) for your training material and pack.

On completion of the course you will need to register with an organisation like SAVA (www.sava-cs.org.uk/pages/registration/how_to_register.php#download), RICS (www.rics.org ) or BRE (www.bre.co.uk). You will also require software to provide you with a data handling system for the property industry. This system allows SAP ratings to be incorporated into a Survey Report.

For Software and Solutions for Energy Assessors and Home Inspectors – Please have a look at www.sava-cs.org.uk/pages/hi_centre/software.php

Here you can find details of SAVA's HCR Software and other digital solutions that are available to members of the SAVA Certification Scheme.

SAVA's HCR Software
SAVA produces web-based software for DEA’s & Home Inspectors that allows them to compile complete DEA & Home Condition reports, which include the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), as well as standalone EPCs. The software is intuitive and easy to use, and it includes standard phrases that can be used to quickly build descriptions of property elements and justifications of the condition ratings applied. It also provides a secure storage area for users to store and back up vital documents such as site notes and photographs.

Why you should possibly join the SAVA Certification Scheme? (This is just a recommendation; we do encourage you to do your home work on this area).
A Certification Scheme is a professional regulator of Home Inspectors, and being able to practice as a Home Inspector depends on joining such a scheme. An individual may have the ABBE Diploma in Home Inspection, but they are not able to practice as a Home Inspector until they are members of a Certification Scheme.

The SAVA Certification Scheme is open to Energy Assessors & Home Inspectors qualifying from all assessment centres. It operates independently of SAVA.

The benefits of joining the SAVA Certification Scheme
The SAVA CS builds upon SAVA's reputation as a champion of residential property surveying standards. Our checks and quality assurance procedures are thorough (but painless!) and guarantee consumer confidence.

By joining the SAVA CS you will gain exclusive use of the SAVA Certification Scheme logo for use in your stationery, website and advertisements. Potential customers will be looking for this badge of quality.

The SAVA CS checks that your clients are happy with the service, and reports any important feedback to you.

If you do not join the SAVA CS, you will not be able to trade as a DEA or Home Inspector and build your business. Other benefits include:

The SAVA Certification Scheme will ensure that DEA’s & Home Inspectors continually reach the high quality standards expected of them.

The Government's strong commitment to Home Information Packs (HIPs) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) has been reinforced in an official announcement made on the 25th January. The introduction of EPCs has been given added urgency following the recent publication of the Stern report into climate change and, crucially, the Government has now confirmed that the EPCs must be attached to estate agents property-sales particulars at the very first stage of marketing.

With around 2 million EPCs needed every year, it will provide a unique opportunity for a whole new career as an energy assessment professional. Up to 7,500 Domestic Energy Assessors (DEA) and Home Inspectors (HIs) will be needed to complete the 2 million EPCs that HIPs will produce in the UK.

This major Government announcement will come as welcome reassurance to the industry and provides the pathway to a lucrative career for anyone aspiring to become a Domestic Energy Assessor.
