Rope Access Course – 1 Week
Title
IRATA Levels 1, 2 & 3 Industrial Rope Access Courses
Requirements
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Candidates should be free of medical conditions which are contra-indications for this type of work
- Candidates should be physically able to perform the tasks expected in terms of strength, agility and co-ordination. They should also be able to withstand the stresses of the working environment such as heat, cold, and inclement weather
- It is recommended that all personnel employed in rope access should be medically fit to perform the work they are likely to undertake, and that a suitable medical should be carried out to confirm this (e.g. suitable medical standards may be found in documentation such as that of the UK Offshore Operators Association)
- No experience in rope access is necessary for entry to Level 1
Duration
Each of the IRATA Industrial Rope Access Courses will normally be held over a four-day period with the assessment on day five.
Aims
- The aim of the IRATA Level 1 Industrial Rope Access Course is to develop the necessary skills and techniques that will enable candidates to pass a level 1 assessment – 5 days
- The aim of the levels 2 and 3 courses is to prepare the operative to move to a higher level of qualification within the IRATA scheme
Objectives
By the end of the course, candidates will be able to perform and demonstrate the following:
- Technicians should be capable of performing full range of Rope Access techniques on site and under the supervision of a Rope Access Safety Supervisor, where applicable. The level 1 technician will not be able to supervise or train other people
- Technicians should be responsible for the maintenance and examination of his/her personal Rope Access equipment, his/her own ropes for access and assisting the Supervisor in rigging and rescue
- Level 1 technicians shall perform basic rescues and demonstrate competence in using and maintaining his/her access equipment
- The candidate must be familiar with current legislation and Company Access and Safety procedures
- Throughout the course the candidate will be continually assessed, and on the last day of the training programme, the candidate will undertake both a written and practical examination by an independent IRATA Assessor
Revalidation and promotion between levels
- There are three levels of attainment in the IRATA system (click here to see the IRATA training scheme flow chart)
- Technicians can move from level 1 to level 2 after the completion of one year and 1000 worked hours, and between levels 2 and 3 after a further year and 1000 worked hours
- Revalidation is required every three years at all levels
