Roofing
Training Courses
This course is designed for the practical and quicker learner, either to cover the basics for working at home or to add a skill for those already in the building trade. The focus will be on practical experience rather than classroom learning. Extra assistance will be given in areas which you may find difficult. This course will help build your confidence and knowledge but we would encourage further training should you wish to achieve a greater degree of expertise in the trade. Start dates are flexible to suit your needs.
We are able to offer a longer intense certified course, which will lead to a National Qualification and your CSCS Card – please call for details.
What will I learn?
You will learn to set out roofing battens to accommodate a variety of appropriate roof coverings; such as concrete and clay tiles along with composite roof slates. A small amount of theory will cover undercloaking, soakers and flashing around the chimney stack.
The one week programme consists of:
- Fixing fascia boards
- Felt and battens
- Laying rosemary tiles
- 12” Redland profile tiles
- Composite slates
Remember: cleanliness and tidiness is vital to the safety of the roofer.
What do I need to bring?
You will be required to bring still capped boots or shoes and overalls (reasonable priced work boots and overalls will be on sale at the training centre). All tools and other materials will be provided for the duration of your training.
Please bring a spare pair of shoes to change into at the end of the day.

CITB and City & Guilds are now looking at ways in which evidence of prior achievements can be simply and cost effectively included in the assessment process for construction NVQs.
To achieve NVQs, all candidates have to prove that they are competent to do a specified range of work to standards acceptable in the industry, and to the satisfaction of employers and their customers. If these qualifications are going to be effective and acceptable it will be desirable for employers or their nominated employees to help in deciding when a person is competent. This in company/on site assessment is called Work Based Recording.
You will be required to bring a work overall and steel capped work boots.
