Achieving an NVQ level 2
The City & Guilds 6129 contains the underpinning knowledge for the NVQ level 2. However, an NVQ can only be obtained through on-the-job assessments carried out in the work place by you. If you are employed in the industry and are able to carry out site-work of the skills covered in this course then we suggest you complete the necessary assessments for your NVQ level 2. If your employer does not offer this service we can arrange assessors at an additional cost. We strongly recommend you photograph all your work for you to add to your portfolio.
Beware - The City & Guilds 6022 and 6032 do NOT qualify as underpinning knowledge for the NVQ 2 and they are NOT mapped into the recognised plumbing framework. The C&G 6022 - Copper Tube Advice & Installation and 6032 - Sanitary Accommodation Installation Maintenance & Design are stand alone certifications.
Plumbing - City & Guilds 6089 NVQ2

Unvented Hot Water Systems – distance learning and 1 day training and exams
This BPEC training and assessment package is for people who wish
to improve their knowledge and skills in the installation and maintenance
of Unvented Hot Water Systems. There is an increase in demand for Unvented
Hot Water Systems and operatives must be aware of the skills required
to ensure the systems are installed correctly.
The BPEC training package consists of an easy to read manual and attendance
at a one-day course, which will include an assessment at the end of the day.
The assessment consists of answering a number of key questions on the correct
installation of controls.
On completion of the training and assessment an individual will be issued with
a BPEC card as evidence of your competence to self install and maintain Unvented
Hot Water Systems.
Building Regulations Approved Document G3 requires that any person who installs a bulk storage (over 15 litres storage capacity) unvented hot water system must be competent. One method of satisfying this requirement is to hold a BPEC Registered Operative identity card or another registered operators identity card (such as CITB).
Course Objectives
The training objectives are to give the candidate knowledge of the following issues:
- The various forms of domestic hot water systems, including unvented systems, for dwellings, small public buildings, small industrial and commercial premises.
- The functional requirements of unvented domestic hot water storage systems and their installation requirements.
- Design a system to meet requirements, performance and safety requirements of G3.
- Describe the methods of protecting unvented hot water storage systems from excessive pressure and temperature.
- Describe and carry out the commissioning of unvented domestic hot water storage systems, including the tests necessary to establish correct working of the system.
- State and identify the causes of common faults in unvented domestic hot water storage systems and components during use and determine preventative and correct measures.
- Describe the working principles of various types of unvented hot water storage systems.
- List the procedures and demonstrate the correct method of safe electrical isolation.
- List the main sources of reference and statutory requirements and codes of practice relating to the installation, commissioning and maintenance of unvented domestic hot water storage systems.
Water Regulations Training Package for Plumbers (WRAS) – distance learning and 1 day training and exams
On 1st July 1999 local Water Byelaws in England and Wales were replaced by the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.
BPEC has produced a learning package to help plumbers update their knowledge of this important legislation which is used to control the installation and use of water supply systems. The WRAS package will help you to implement Water Regulations competently, not only in new installation work, but also to ensure you are able to recognise and rectify contraventions that you come across in existing water supply systems. It is aimed primarily at practising plumbers who already have knowledge of hot and cold water systems and anyone who is involved with the installation, design, or specification of water systems or with buildings containing water systems. It will also be of benefit to those learners with limited previous knowledge.
The WRAS training package will enable course participants to:
- become familiar with the contents of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999;
- know how to comply with the Regulations in practice;
- be aware of the primary legislation underpinning the Regulations;
- have an understanding of the documents used to enhance and explain the meaning of the regulations and in particular the Regulators Specification on the prevention of backflow and the WRAS Water Regulations Guide; and
- give you the know-how so you are able to attend a BPEC Training and Assessment Centre for the training and assessment day.
The WRAS training package
The WRAS training package contains an introductory booklet, 12 learning manuals and one support document in the form of a glossary of terms. The learning modules are supported by an introductory video outlining the contents of the regulations. Upon subscription to the training package you will be sent the introductory booklet which will be followed by the learning manuals.
The twelve learning units are:
- Introduction and background
- The Regulations (a detailed look at the regulations)
- Materials and substances in contact with water
- Requirements for water fittings
- Water system design and installation
- Commissioning (flushing, testing and sterilisation)
- Prevention of cross connection to unwholesome water
- Backflow prevention
- Cold water services
- Hot water services
- WCs, flushing devices and urinals
- Sanitary appliances and water for outside use.
Training and assessment
Having received the manuals you will have at least two weeks to work through
all 12 manuals and prepare before the one day course which will comprise
a half day of instruction and half day of assessments. (NB/ if you already
have a Training Package we will deduct a sum from your course fee).
The assessment will consist of two multi-choice question papers, in one of
which you will be able to refer to your Training Package manuals, and a practical
test, where you will be asked to identify contraventions of the Regulations,
which are shown on a video.
Successful candidates will receive a BPEC/Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) Certificate.
Why do I need a Certificate?
Under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, Water Companies can
appoint Approved Contractors (sometimes called Approved Plumbers) for the
area they cover. Holding a BPEC/WRAS Certificate should prove that your knowledge
of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 is good enough for
you to become an Approved Contractor. In the case of employees, the certificate
will provide evidence to an Approved Contractor that you have a sound knowledge
of the Regulations.
What are the advantages of becoming an Approved Contractor?
Approved Contractors do not need to notify the relevant authorities of certain
installations which non-approved contractors must serve notice on. Many water
companies compile lists of Approved Contractors and work will only goes to
those individuals on the list and it is likely that local authorities and Housing
Associations will insist that plumbing contractors are Approved Contractors
too.
