This course is designed for the practical and quick learner, either
to cover the 
basics for working at home or to add a skill for those
already in the building trade. Extra assistance will be given in areas
which you may find difficult. The course will help build your confidence
and knowledge, but we would encourage further training should you wish
to achieve a greater degree of expertise in this trade. Start dates
are flexible to suit your needs.
What will I learn?
The introduction covers health and safety, and the safe and correct use of plasterers mechanical tools and equipment. Also discussion on good housekeeping and PPE.
- Floor screeding
This covers preparing the floor area for screeding, selecting tools and equipment for the job and laying floor screeds.
- Using the plasters hawk and trowel
Applying a sand and lime scratch coat to the wall area (single coat). Also prepare the wall area to accept a second coat of sand and lime, float off to level and trowel. Then finish wall with devil float.

How to fix floating beads to reveals
There will be a demonstration and then student practice time.
- How to fix different beads
Again, a demonstration and then student practice. Explanation on when beads should be fixed and where. More practice for the student using Lamotex on bare faced wall areas.
- Dot and Dab method of boarding to bare wall
areas
This will involve levelling boards ready for taping and skimming.
- Tutor demonstration on skimming
An explanation on the reason for using the Dot and Dab method for both fixing and skimming.
- Discussion on different backgrounds and types of finishes
What do I need to bring?
You will be required to wear steel-capped boots or shoes and overalls. All tools and other material will be provided for the duration of your course. (Reasonably priced work boots and overalls will be on sale at the training centre).
Please bring a spare pair of shoes to change into at the end of the day.

If you would like to achieve an NVQ2 in Plastering, the course outline below illustrates some of the units you will need to demonstrate competence in. To complete your NVQ2 you will need to demonstrate your skills and competence in the workplace where you will be assessed according to your level of ability. The skills which you demonstrate alongside additional evidence generated by you on site will be examined by an assessor in the workplace. This can be arranged through an OSAT registered centre.
While you are in the training centre you will gain the skills and confidence to help you achieve long term sustainable employment. We will register you with the CITB - awarding body and register and help you take the first steps towards achieving your site safety card (CSCS card). We will also give you advice regarding CITB criteria for holding the card.
Health & Safety / Safe working practices / correct use of tools and electrical equipment / using plant correctly / follow safe methods of work when working at heights / using materials / storage of materials / rotation of stock / safe correct use of the Pan Mixer / Good house keeping / PPE.
Prepare floor areas for screeding (using simulated floor screed material). Correct use of screed rails and level. Follow recognised working procedures and safe working practices. Working with the correct tools for the job and working the relevant personal protective equipment. Finish required to industrial standards and within accepted tolerances.
Learning to use the Plasterers Hawk and Trowel. Solid plastering to wall areas using Lamotex (sand and lime). Practicing with the Hawk and Trowel. Apply 1 st coat Lamotex to wall areas, rule off Lamotex to provide flat finish and scratch ready to accept 2 nd coat of Lamotex. This will help the individual to handle the plasterers hawk and trowel.
Apply single backing coat of Lamotex to bare faced block work and prepare the finish to accept a Tyrolean finish. The student will need to demonstrate confidence in the application of 3 finishes;

Before moving on to the next stage of the programme. Wall areas will need to be flat (Levelled off using the aluminium float) and correctly presented prior to the application of the Tyrolean finish coat. The Tyrolean finish must be consistent in size and coverage of the backing coat. 2 Coat Lamotex coverage of bare faced block work coat 1 to be evenly applied ruled off where necessary and scratched ready to receive the second coat. The second coat will either be of a fined down sponged finished or finished using the wooden or plastic devil float.
Application of different beads to corners and reveals. Beads will be fitted correctly to industrial standards i.e. Plum to accepted standards. Beads to be finished both as floating and solid beads with finished areas presented to Industry Standards fitting of Bell cast beads and stop beads again finished to standards acceptable to Industry.
Selecting the correct tools and equipment required to apply finishing plaster to practice panels and walls. Practice on wall panels with 2 coat work until the student has reached the standard accepted by the Industry. Move onto a wall in a room and then onto 2 opposite walls to pick up speed to move onto joining walls to work 2 wet areas together. Once the student has mastered this stage the student will move onto Plaster application on ceiling boards.
At this stage the plasterer will be taught how to make up stud partition and apply and remove boards and also learn how to patch. Theory and practical.
Cutting internal and external angles on the bench from Gyproc Coving. Prepare wall and ceiling area to receive coving. It is important to keep ceiling line and wall area clean and free from Gyprop Coving Adhesive. Cleanliness must be paramount to leave a job meeting Industry standards for the follow on trade. Dot + Dab method of fixing boards to bare faced walls / levelling.
Sand and cement render to wall areas prepared to receive the material. Material should be mixed correctly using the relevant ratios of sand and cement. A Knowledge and understanding of additives will be necessary to help achieve the desired finished quality. Finish will wither be floated or fined down.
Concreting
The student will be required to demonstrate the ability to set out form work, mix and prepare to the correct consistency the concrete required to fill the area of form work and produce a trowelled finished acceptable to industry and within tolerance specified.
