Painting And Decorating Course – 1 Week
A useful course for gaining the fundamentals required for Painting and Decorating. During the week you will build confidence with the tools and materials commonly used in the Industry. The course will contain a mixture of theory and practical.
Health and safety, PPE and safe working practices. Also covering the correct use of tools, plant and equipment used in the trade.
- Preparation of new woodwork prior to applying decorative finishes
- Preparation of previously painted surfaces, prior to applying decorative finishes
- Preparation of newly plastered wall areas
- Applying water-based finishes by brush and roller
- Applying oil-based finishes by brush and roller
- Basic principles of paper hanging and stripping
What do I need to bring?
You will be required to wear steel-capped boots or shoes and overalls. All tools and other material will be provided for the duration of your course. (Reasonably priced work boots and overalls will be on sale at the training centre). Please bring a spare pair of shoes to change into at the end of the day.

If you would like to achieve an NVQ2 in Painting & Decorating, the course outline below illustrates some of the units you will need to demonstrate competence in. To complete your NVQ2 you will need to demonstrate your skills and competence in the workplace where you will be assessed according to your level of ability. The skills which you demonstrate alongside additional evidence generated by you on site will be examined by an assessor in the workplace. This can be arranged through an OSAT registered centre.
While you are in the training centre you will gain the skills and confidence to help you achieve long term sustainable employment. We will register you with the CITB - awarding body and register and help you take the first steps towards achieving your site safety card (CSCS card). We will also give you advice regarding CITB criteria for holding the card.
Unit 1: Storage of tools and equipment ready for use
Follow instruction, working safely using recognised procedures and planning daily routines, selecting equipment components and materials, stack and store relevant materials. Understand industrial standards and requirements.
Unit 2: Health & Safety
Follow instructions, follow safe working practises / select and prepare materials and componen. Understand industries needs and requirements working alongside other trades.
Unit 3: Prepare work areas
Protecting work areas and adjacent work areas / follow instructions and safe working practices, preparing and selecting materials and components. Clear work areas of obstacles, protection of all items in and around the work area.
Unit 4: Prepare surfaces for decoration
Follow instructions, plan follow and adopt safe working practices, select and prepare materials and equipment. Prepare surfaces ready for decoration / protect materials and surrounding property. Preparation of surfaces by stripping, cleaning, filling, levelling and smoothing. Apply specialist one off surface treatments that act as a precursor to the following decorative / protective finish to be applied e.g. Glue Size, Primer, Wood Preservation Stabilising Solutions and u/coats.
Unit 5: Apply paint by brush and roller
Following instructions, planning and following safe working practices.
Select and prepare materials and components / estimating quantities for painting operations. Applying a broad range of paint systems by brush and roller to surfaces large and small. Maintaining materials and paint applications for further usage.
Unit 6: Apply standard wallpapers to non complex surface areas
Follow instructions, adopt and follow safe working practices. Select and prepare equipment and materials / hanging medium to light weight wall coverings to walls and ceilings / cutting and trimming to wall and ceiling features / clean and maintain tools and equipment.
Unit 7: Apply basic specialist paint finishes
Follow instructions / adopt follow safe working practices / select and prepare materials and components / prepare backgrounds for decorative finishes.
