Gas Categorisation Course
Why choose this course?
This course is designed to allow aspirant operatives an inroad to the domestic gas sector in the UK. With the sector currently experiencing a lack of suitable trained and qualified competent operatives this course is designed to address this and be undertaken by candidates who have a good technical background or are skilled with manual dexterity. You will also require sound mathematical skills and a good knowledge of English. On successful completion of this course the candidate will be a valuable commodity with excellent prospects of full time employment in a sector which is currently offering very good levels of remuneration. Obviously each candidate’s aptitude and drive will dictate how quickly this can happen, but you shall be given the tools to succeed with our support.
How is the course structured?
- Three weeks gas utilisation training at the centre with an even mix of practical and theoretical activities.
- Ten weeks on site training with a CORGI registered company. (You will need to align yourself with a CORGI registered engineer in order to build your portfolio).
- Five days assessment under the ACS scheme which shall include:
- CCN1 core gas safety
- CEN1 domestic central heating
- WAT1 domestic water heaters
- CKR1 domestic cookers
- HTR1 domestic gas fires & space heaters
The training that will be covered in the course is detailed in the syllabus but at the centre we pride ourselves on the skilled form of delivery and wealth of experience that can be passed on to candidates. The training will cover all technical and underpinning knowledge requirements to allow the candidate to sit the ACS assessment. You may need to return to the centre after your 4 weeks to complete a couple of things, this can be discussed when you attend the course.
Your hands-on experience will be conducted over a minimum of ten weeks and a portfolio of evidence shall be required to be produced demonstrating competence under supervision of a CORGI registered engineer. This evidence shall then be monitored and evaluated to make sure candidates have produced sufficient range of work.
The five day assessment shall also be conducted at the centre in Exeter taking the format of initial assessment as laid down by GGFO certification. The rules and format of which are available upon request. Upon successful completion of the assessments your details shall be electronically submitted by GGFO to Corgi to be entered upon the national database for approved gas operatives.

What are the employment prospects and will I be CORGI registered ?
There are excellent prospects of full time employment throughout the sector as a result of this qualification. You shall NOT be CORGI registered as this is done either by the company offering employment or by the sole trader and is a separate process to ACS registration.
Please read the supporting information for a fuller picture of course structure.
Application for CORGI Registration
It is important to note that prior to applying for CORGI registration, you or your gas operative must be in possession of valid certificate(s) of gas safety competence for the categories of gas work in which you will be working. If certificates of competence are not in place CORGI will be unable to process the application.
Once you have passed your assessments, you can apply for an application pack from CORGI. After applying for registration, providing you meet the necessary requirements, a CORGI Inspector will carry out a Pre-registration assessment visit. On completion of the pre-registration process, CORGI decides whether your application will be accepted or not.
CORGI registration is valid for a year from April through to March. All registered installers necessarily renew their registration in March. CORGI sends out notification of renewal in advance.
