This course is designed for the practical and quick learner, either to cover the basics for working at home or to add a skill for those already in the building trade. Extra assistance will be given in areas which you may find difficult. This course will help build your confidence and knowledge; but we would encourage further training should you wish to achieve a greater degree of expertise in this trade. Start dates are flexible to suit your needs.
What will I learn?
This course is specifically designed for those looking to learn the skill of bricklaying, but who have little or no knowledge. It will provide maximum bricklaying skills in 5 days using bricks and blocks.
From mixing mortar to building a wall, it will be a hands-on course (no written work), to gain trowel skills throughout the week. You will learn how to lay bricks correctly, 4” and 9” brick work keeping the walls level, square and vertical, and build a cavity wall using wall ties and blocks. You will also point the wall as you are building. This course is designed to give you maximum ability in 5 days.
Fact sheets will be given at the end of the course for further reference.
This course will help you build your confidence and knowledge in order for you to pursue a career in the industry. We would encourage you to continue with further training down the line.
What do I need to bring?
You will be required to bring steel-capped boots or shoes and overalls. All tools and other materials will be provided for the duration of your course. Please bring a spare pair of shoes to change into at the end of the day.
Work toward a National Qualification & attain your CSCS Card
If you would like to achieve an NVQ2 in Bricklaying, the course outline below illustrates some of the units you will need to demonstrate competence in. To complete your NVQ2 you will need to demonstrate your skills and competence in the workplace where you will be assessed according to your level of ability. The skills which you demonstrate alongside additional evidence generated by you on site will be examined by an assessor in the workplace. This can be arranged through an OSAT registered centre.
While you are in the training centre you will gain the skills and confidence to help you achieve long term sustainable employment. We will register you with the CITB - awarding body and register and help you take the first steps towards achieving your site safety card (CSCS card). We will also give you advice regarding CITB criteria for holding the card.
Storage of tools and equipment ready for use
Follow instruction, working safely using recognised procedures and planning daily routines, selecting equipment components and materials, stack and store relevant materials in rotational order. Understand industrial standards and requirements.
Erect and dismantle basic working platform
Follow instructions, follow safe working practises / select and prepare materials and components / erect and dismantle working platforms. Understand industries needs and requirements.
Work efficiently
Follow instructions, follow safe working practices planning and carrying out efficient working practices / understand industries needs and requirements.
Brick and Block-work Walling
Understanding information, follow instructions and safe working practices, preparing and selecting materials and components. Erecting components (Brick and Block-work). Understanding of components and situations with regard to new build or refurbishment.
Set out basic buildings
Follow instructions, plan follow and adopt safe working practices and procedures. Select and prepare materials and equipment. Setting out work. Understand what is required when working on new build or Refurbishment contracts.
Construct walling detail
Following instructions, planning and following safe working practices. Select and prepare relevant materials and equipment. Carry out detailed work to brick and block-work structures. Understanding of components and situations with regard to new build or refurbishment.
Signalling for the movement of loads
Signalling and slinging loads ready for lifting. Transferring loads using lifting equipment. Using ropes and slings and other equipment where specific attention is given to the lifting points and balance of the load. Safely lowering and unslinging a load. Using signalling and communicating clearly. We will help you take the first steps towards achieving your site safety card (CSCS card). We will help you to register and give you advice regarding CITB criteria for holding the card. The CITB will then guide and support you in the achievement of the card which will enable you to work on site.
What do I need to bring?
You will be required to wear steel-capped boots or shoes and overalls. All tools and other material will be provided for the duration of your course. (Reasonably priced work boots and overalls will be on sale at the training centre). Please bring a spare pair of shoes to change into at the end of the day.
