Plumbing Q&As
Is it realistic to think I can become a plumber?
No reason
why not. We have trained people from all walks of life from IT to RAF engineers.
The real question is how you would feel with your arm down other people's
soil pipes.
I would just think of the money.
Yes, everybody's been
reading stories about how you can earn £70,000 a year. However, our
information from the industry shows that based on nationally agreed rates
a new entrant to the plumbing industry can expect from around £14,000
to £18,500 and senior technical plumbers earn between £25,000
and £30,000 (depending on location). Add to this the advantage of a
skill for life where you can take as little or as much work as you want and
redundancy becomes a much less scary prospect. The more experience you get
the more you will be able to earn and be in control of your life.
But there's an acute shortage of plumbers.
This is true.
Industry estimates that another 6,000 are need per year to keep up with demand
and those retiring. This demand is not currently being met through young
apprenticeships, so the adult career changer should play a key part in the
solution to this problem.
What will Construction Training Services provide for me?
We have two
choices depending on where you want to take your career. For those
who are looking to attain some excellent plumbing skills without
a need to advance to full qualification our plumbing foundation course
gives you four weeks of theoretical and practical experience, day-in
day-out with our experienced tutors. These can be taken in one week
blocks at dates to suit your needs.
If you are wanting to work towards becoming a fully qualified plumber the first step is the City & Guilds 6129 technical certificate. This course is delivered over 12 weeks in total, but built into this is time for you to go out and get hands-on experience in the industry. You have up to 18 months to complete all 12 unit. The 6129 is the industry recognised pathway into the industry. Some providers may offer to teach you the skills of the trade with books and CDs, but our experience has been that you can best learn the essential skills through intensive daily contact with highly qualified tutors there at hand to answer any questions you may have. The choice is yours.
It involves a lot of skills by the sound of it, so do I need prior
experience?
No, we have trained men and women of all ages but
a plumber above all ought to have practical ability and good manual skills.
You should be able to plan methodically, take accurate measurements and
follow drawings, plans and written or spoken instructions.
So how would I get started?
If you have the time you can
try and get on a course at your local college, but spaces are limited and
it could take quite a while to complete the course. Our courses will give
you daily hands-on training in dedicated centres in a period which suits
your needs but can be achieved quicker than at a local college. Most importantly
you will learn the skills to add value to an employer from day one. With
the training you receive you can quickly progress on to NVQ level 2 and eventually
3 - earning good money along the way!
What does it mean to be fully qualified?
This is a good
question to which you will get many different answers, but our benchmark
at Construction Training Services is NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
